What reed strength should a beginner start with?Updated 2 months ago
Most beginners are started on a 2.5 strength reed – this holds true for both cane and Légère reeds.
A strength 2.5 offers a balanced mix of easy response and moderate resistance, which helps new players produce sound without excessive effort while still developing their embouchure. Starting on a reed that’s too hard (like a 3.5) can be frustrating for a beginner because the instrument will feel unresponsive and require too much air/pressure.
On the other hand, a reed that’s too soft might make it too easy to get sound, potentially hindering the development of proper embouchure technique.
Over many years, music teachers have found 2.50 to be an ideal starting point, providing that “balanced blend” of ease and resistance for newcomers.
As you progress, you can then decide to adjust strength up or down based on your comfort and tonal needs.
For very young students on instruments like clarinet or alto sax, some teachers might start on a 2.0 if even 2.5 feels too hard initially. But typically, 2.5 is the go-to beginner strength.
