What happens if I use a reed that’s not the right strength for me?Updated 2 months ago

Using a reed much too soft or hard for you can slow your progress. For a beginner, using a very hard reed (that perhaps an advanced player would use) can lead to frustration – the newcomer can’t produce a good sound and might even develop bad habits or strain by biting too hard. This could discourage practice. Conversely, if an advanced player sticks with a very soft beginner reed, they might find they can’t push their dynamics or tone to the level they want; the soft reed could “shut down” at high air pressure, limiting their expressive range.

The general advice is: match the reed to your current ability and preference. As you improve, you’ll naturally gravitate to different strengths. If you’re ever unsure, starting with a moderate strength (2.5) and then experimenting harder or softer is a safe approach.

Remember, the right strength is the one that gives you both comfort and control.
